Grace is the most beautiful word in the universe if you understand what it fully means. If a beggar came to you and asked for some money for food, and feeling compassion you gave him $20, that would be called mercy.
If another beggar came to you and cursed you and punched you in the face, then asked you for money for food and you then got up and blessed him and gave him $1,000 for food - that would be grace. You see, grace is to give a totally undeserving person a free gift.
In a much greater way, grace describes how God gives us eternal salvation by means of grace through the agency of faith. Grace is something you cannot earn or deserve. God says that grace can only be given through faith, because faith is simply an act of receiving an undeserved gift that in and of itself has no merit. As God explained it, "For BY grace you have been saved THROUGH faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as the result of works, in order that no should boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9 NASB)
God's grace not only gives us Eternal Salvation through an act of faith, it is also by this same means that God's grace gives us all we need to be victorious in living the Christian life through a moment by moment faith. Note this all important verse that makes this clear, "As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the LORD, so walk in Him." (Colossians 2:6 NASB) The original Greek verbs used here bring out clearly the key to living daily for Christ. The verb, "have received" is in the aorist tense, which means something that happened at a point in time. In this context it means we received Christ Jesus the LORD once for all in the past. The verb "walk" is in the present tense, which means continuous action in the present time. So it means to "keep on walking in Him" in the same way you received Him once for all for salvation, so we are to keep walking in Christ by the same means we received Him, by grace through faith. We receive the empowering, guidance and joy of the Holy Spirit as we moment by moment receive His grace through faith. This is a foretaste of what this series is all about. It would take me a very large book to explain all that grace means, but I give it my best shot in this series.
